Civil Engineering Student Worker program opportunities

The Civil Engineering Student Worker Program is currently accepting applications for Summer 2026. Below is a list of positions available as of October 2025.

Students applying to the Civil Engineering Student Worker Program must complete the CEP Position Preference form and also email the following items to the MnDOT Civil Engineering Program in addition to submitting their application on the mn.gov/careers website:

Fort Snelling

Environmental Stewardship

Location: 6000 Minnehaha Ave, Fort Snelling

Description: Provide assistance to the Office of Environmental Stewardship Modeling through updating existing databases, researching materials, and assisting with environmental documentation. 

Primary tasks:

  • Assist in water, air, and soil quality monitoring and sampling at locations throughout the state to obtain, evaluate, and apply data gathered
  • Service, calibrate, maintain, and repair air and water quality monitoring and sampling equipment

Construction Survey (Metro District)

Description: Serve as a member of a field survey crew performing location and construction surveys.

Primary tasks:

  • Make horizontal and vertical measurements using appropriate methods and procedures
  • Locate and establish the coordinate position and elevation of natural and artificial features above, below, and upon the surface
  • Set survey stakes such as key stakes, blue tops, paving hubs, slope stakes, and drainage stakes

Bridge Hydraulics (Central Office)

Description: Assist with project review from conception, support projects through construction, and develop repair recommendations for existing bridges in need of repair

Primary tasks:

  • Assist with documentation of repair progress by performing in-field photo logs of repairs
  • Assist with the review of recently completed projects to ensure all pile reports are properly saved and stored

Description: Provide support in Asset Management Planning in the Office of Transportation System Management with pavement and bridge investment scenario analysis.

Primary tasks:

  • Work with the Materials and Bridge offices to understand their asset management’s systems and functionality
  • Create tables, charts, and graphs to show different capital investment options to manage pavement and bridge
  • Utilize management systems to run scenarios that will optimize measures like condition, remaining service life, and sustainability ratios

  • Provide hydraulic support, coordination, inspection, and documentation for permits and for grading and culvert projects

Wilmar

Contract Administration/ADA Review (District 8)

Description: Review and update District 8’s ADA inventory

Primary tasks:

  • Review and update the current district ADA inventory, checking for compliance issues and recording the results in the ADA inventory database
  • Accurately identify, record, and quantify any ADA deficiencies and noncompliance found
