Hwy 61 lane closures north of Lake City begin Sept. 5 for resurfacing

LAKE CITY, Minn. – Motorists on Highway 61 north of Lake City will experience lane closures as crews are scheduled to begin resurfacing the road Sept. 5, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The Highway 61 resurfacing work is anticipated to begin Sept. 5 at the south end of the project from Hansen’s Harbor to Wells Creek Bridge. This work is expected to be completed by Sept. 10.

Highway 61 will remain open for residents and people visiting businesses during the resurfacing work. Flaggers will direct motorists through the project area, so short traffic delays are possible. Motorists who don't need to access properties in the work zone should use Goodhue County Road 5 in Lake City and Highway 58 in Red Wing to detour around the project site.

Crews are adding the final surface layer on Highway 61 at the north side of the project from Sevastopol Road/ 277th Avenue to Ski Road/Hill Avenue and work is scheduled to be completed by Sept. 5. Flaggers are directing traffic in this area also, so short-term delays are possible.

This work is part of the project that is resurfacing approximately 10 miles of Highway 61 from Lake City to Red Wing. It also includes realigning some intersections to increase visibility, widening the road in multiple places to accommodate a bike lane, upgrading guardrails and completing bridge maintenance.

Other traffic impacts are occurring during this project. Highway 61 and Ski Road/Hill Avenue intersection is closed for turn-lane construction and is scheduled to re-open in September. The Wells Creek Bridge is expected to re-open to traffic at the mid-September when improvements are complete. Motorists can find all of the traffic impacts on the MnDOT construction project website .
