Cleaning, inspection work to begin Oct. 2 in Rochester for 6th St. SW bridge over Hwy 52

ROCHESTER, Minn. – Pedestrians should be alert to alternate routes on the Sixth Street Southwest bridge over Highway 52 on Oct. 2-3 as crews clean and conduct repairs to the planters, irrigation, and drainage systems, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The city of Rochester and MnDOT are coordinating the effort so when city crews dig out the planter boxes on the bridge over Highway 52 to clean and inspect the systems, MnDOT crews can also inspect areas of the bridge.

During the work, pedestrians will be detoured to the other side of the street to use as their crossing. Bridges with median planters will see closures to the dedicated turn lanes. The temporary closures will keep pedestrians and workers safe.

Work is expected to progress to Second Street Southwest and 19th Street Northwest, but those efforts have not been scheduled yet.

Safety

Motorists may encounter lane closures or lane shifts, uneven road surfaces, equipment and other unexpected obstacles when driving near or through work zones. MnDOT advises motorists to:

  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Go hands-free and minimize other distractions (e.g., don’t eat or drink while driving).
  • Follow posted speed limits; the fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.
  • Avoid making lane changes within work zones.
