Hwy 61 project completed between Lake City and Red Wing

LAKE CITY, Minn. – Construction on Highway 61 between Lake City and Red Wing is complete, and the road is fully open again to traffic, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

MnDOT thanks everyone for their patience and attention to safety while construction work occurred to improve the road. Crews will continue to be onsite for the next several weeks completing some minor work and cleanup so please remain attentive.

Motorists will be able to use new passing lanes in each direction north of Frontenac. Passing lanes were identified by manufacturers who were interviewed in southeast Minnesota as an important priority and were included as a recommendation in the 2018 District 6 Manufacturer’s Perspectives on Minnesota’s Transportation System study . Additionally, 10 miles of Highway 61 were resurfaced, eight new light poles were installed at four intersections and nine turn lanes and two bypass lanes were built between Lake City and Red Wing. The project also realigned some intersections to increase visibility, widened the road in multiple places to accommodate a bike lane, upgraded guardrails and completed bridge maintenance.
