Public invited Nov. 29 to learn about Hwy 61 CP Rail bridge replacement in Red Wing

RED WING, Minn. – The public is invited to attend an in-person public meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 29 to learn more about a project to replace the Highway 61 bridge over CP Rail south of Red Wing, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Join us any time from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 29 at the Red Wing Public Library’s Foot Room, 225 East Ave, Red Wing, MN 55066. People attending the meeting can learn more about the planned improvements, construction staging, and project schedule. If you are unable to attend, you will be able to find information from the public meeting at the project website beginning on the meeting date.

The new Highway 61 bridge over the Canadian Pacific rail line will be constructed to the north of the existing bridge to maintain two-way traffic during construction. Highway construction will begin in spring of 2024. The construction will be completed in phases and use temporary widening to allow enough space for one lane of traffic in each direction. Motorists can expect a reduced speed through the work zone, reduced shoulder widths and temporary shoulder and lane closures. Construction should be complete in fall of 2024.

Once completed, the project will provide:

  • A new bridge over the railroad (the original bridge was built in 1955)
  • A smoother ride for motorists just south of the correctional facility to Cemstone
  • Wider shoulders for bicyclists using the Mississippi River Trail
  • New left turn lanes will be built at commercial business entrances and Golf Links Drive

MnDOT invites and encourages participation by all.  If you need an ASL, foreign language interpreter, or other reasonable accommodation, or need documents in an alternative format (such as braille or large print), please email your request to Janet Miller at ADArequest.dot@state.mn.us or call 651-366-4720 or 1-800-657-3774 (Greater Minnesota); 711 or 1-800-627-3529 (Minnesota Relay).
