REMINDER: Highway 10 and Highway 71 closed and detoured for road construction in Wadena

BAXTER, Minn. – Drivers traveling through Wadena should consider plans and be prepared for delays as Highway 10 and Highway 71 are now under construction with two detours in effect, advises the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Here’s what to expect until late August:

  • Highway 10 is closed to through traffic between Highway 71 and Otter Tail County Road 75. The detour uses Highway 71, Highway 29 and Otter Tail County Road 75.
  • Highway 71 is closed to through traffic between Highway 10 and Juniper Avenue. The detour uses Highway 10, Wadena County Road 20 (Second Street NW) and Juniper Avenue. Watch for a temporary all-way stop at County Road 20 and Juniper Avenue.
  • Wadena remains open for residents and visitors; however, expect changes when navigating through the work zone:
    • Segments of hard closures and use of alternate accesses when necessary to work beneath the road; follow construction signs, enter/exit nearest your destination and stay out of barricaded areas.
    • Plan for gravel surfaces, narrow lanes, reduced speeds, flaggers and heavy equipment.
    • Pedestrian sidewalks may also be closed; follow signed detours.

Motorists should plan accordingly, use alternate routes or travel at off-peak hours to avoid delays, especially on weekends. For real-time travel speeds and current closures on Highway 10 and Highway 71, check 511mn.org.

When complete in August 2027, the $52 million project will provide a smoother, stronger and expanded four-lane highway; improved safety, access and traffic flow through Wadena; and updated underground infrastructure and city utilities.
