Hwy 61 traffic to switch to new bridge south of Red Wing on Oct. 15

RED WING, Minn. – Motorists traveling on Highway 61 south of Red Wing will begin traveling on the new bridge over the CP Rail tracks on Oct. 15, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Motorists should be alert to pavement changes on Highway 61 at the start of the project at both ends and also at each end of the new bridge. The final paving layer will not be placed until early November, so motorists will experience a small bump at these sites until the final paving is completed. Signs will alert motorists to the bumps.

After the traffic switch, construction crews will begin demolition of the old bridge south of the new bridge. Demolition work will begin Wednesday, Oct. 16.

The work is connected with the Highway 61 bridge over the Canadian Pacific Railway, and will provide a new bridge, better sight distances and connection to Highway 61.

Meanwhile, traffic using Golf Links Drive from Highway 61 continues to be detoured:

For northbound Highway 61 travelers:

  • Left onto Flower Valley Road
  • Right onto northbound Highway 58
  • Right onto Bush Street, which turns into Golf Links Drive

For southbound Highway 61 travelers:

  • Right onto southbound Highway 58
  • Left onto Bush Street, which turns into Golf Links Drive

Traffic will be detoured until late October.

The contractor for the $10.2 million project is Redstone Construction, LLC.
