I-35 bridge work in Duluth traffic control change starts June 23

DULUTH, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation will be changing traffic control for bridge repair work on I-35 in Duluth starting on Monday, June 23. This construction project is resurfacing the bridge deck and replacing joints on I-35 between Mesaba Avenue and 5th Avenue West and working on the I-35 northbound off-ramp to 5th Avenue West and the southbound on-ramp from 5th Avenue West.

The head-to-head configuration on I-35 in Downtown Duluth between Garfield Avenue and Lake Avenue will be placed onto the I-35 northbound bridge on Monday, June 23 and Tuesday, June 24.

On Monday, June 23, the ramp from I-535 to I-35 northbound will close for the afternoon while traffic control work is being performed and northbound traffic is placed back onto I-35 northbound. On Tuesday, June 24, southbound traffic will be shifted to head-to-head on to the northbound I-35 lanes.

The following ramps will be closed: I-35 northbound offramp to 5th Avenue West, I-35 southbound onramp from Lake Avenue, and I-35 onramp from 5th Avenue West.

Traffic will remain in head-to-head configuration through mid-August.

Work zone safety tips:

  • Obey posted speed limits. The fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.
  • Drive undistracted. Avoid using phones, mobile devices, adjusting the radio – even eating – while in work zones.
  • Move over. Give workers room to safely complete their work.
  • Be patient. Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Avoid making unnecessary lane changes.
  • Never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
  • Expect work zones to constantly change. Day to day you could experience lane shifts, closures, narrower lanes, moving workers and vehicles.
