Section 1: Overview
Originator:Minnesota Department of Transportation
Title:
CONTROL_SECTION
Abstract:
Control sections are linear representations of the Minnesota Department of Transportation mainline trunk highways. The mainline trunk highways are divided into segments called control sections for record keeping, maintenance, construction, and other administrative purposes. These segments generally have termini at county lines or major intersections. They are tied to the pavement, not to the signed or legislative route that follows it. If the signed or legislative route moves, the control section stays with the pavement creating a stable base for record keeping.
A control section is identified by its control section number. The control section number consists of four digits, with the first two digits describing the county code followed by two other digit numbers within that county.
Control section updates are monitored and approved by the Route Numbering & Control Section Committee. As the Data Stewards for control sections, the Committee documents changes related to: termini extents, associated statutory routes, relocations, and/or retirement of road sections, in the form of memos/letters. Such changes may be due to jurisdictional transfers (typically from state to county) when new highway segments or entirely new state highways are built.
Currently, this dataset only represents existing control sections; planned control sections available upon request.
Purpose:
The control sections dataset was developed to fill a need for a continuous, statewide GIS base map. As the fundamental building blocks of the trunk highways mainlines, control sections are associated with constitutional and legislative routes and are referenced in the descriptions of centerlines and/or definite location commissioner orders.

Attribute Accuracy:
Logical Consistency:
Completeness:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Location accuracy for features derived from USGS 7.5-minute quadrangles cannot be assumed to exceed National Map Accuracy Standards for 1:24,000 scale maps (+/- 40 feet or 12 meters). Accuracy of updates based on imagery is dependent on the resolution of the imagery used. Imagery used for updates would represent the best imagery available at the time of the update.
Vertical Positional Accuracy:
N/A
Lineage:
Originally coded in the legacy Transportation Information System (TIS) and migrated into the new Linear Referencing System (LRS). Data created from local authority notes, review of online data sources, construction plans and video log.
