Summary of work
On July 12, 2021, installation of an active warning system for Hwy 61 will start near La Moille, south of Winona. This is the first active warning system in southeast Minnesota.
The system will sense when icy conditions might be present along a 3-mile stretch of Hwy 61. Because of the highway’s geography of shading bluffs, the highway position adjacent to the Mississippi River and curvature of the road, this area is prone to icy conditions. These conditions have contributed to a high crash rate. The sensors will activate a flashing beacon above a Slippery Road Sign when conditions are likely to be slippery. There will be three signs in each direction along that area.
Estimated completion is April 2022. The completion date is dependent on the arrival of materials to finish the project.
