History and significance
Bridge 5722 was built in 1936-1937 to carry Section Street (U.S. Highway 63) over Spring Valley Creek in the city of Spring Valley in Fillmore County. It is a monolithic, three-cell, skewed, reinforced-concrete culvert with extended apron walls. Because of its urban location, it has an ornamental railing type identified as a “Wisconsin Rail.” Many concrete box culverts have been built since the Minnesota Highway Commission created standardized plans in the early twentieth century. In 1990 a survey of Minnesota bridges identified only 50 pre-1957 box culverts with two or more spans that survived without modification. Fewer still had unusual railings. As a result, Bridge 5722 is significant as example of this once-common type.
