Paving on Hwy 9 reconstruction project in Barnesville scheduled for Aug. 16-23

Thru-traffic detour remains in place; local traffic will encounter major delays

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. – Starting Wednesday, Aug. 16, weather permitting, local traffic in Barnesville will encounter milling and paving operations, with flaggers and pilot cars, on Highway 9/Front Street between Main Avenue and Highway 34 (Phase 1) and between Highway 34 and Interstate 94 (Phase 3) for the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s 2023 Highway 9 reconstruction project.

Highway 9 thru-traffic remains detoured to Interstate 94 and County Road 30 until the project is complete in September.

Crews will begin Wednesday, Aug. 16, in Phase 3, north of Highway 34 to I-94, and will remain in this area through Saturday, Aug. 19. During this work, local traffic should expect to encounter flaggers and pilot cars, with periodic stops and long delays on Highway 9.

The week of Aug. 21, crews will jump back to Phase 1, between Main Avenue and Highway 34, to complete the final lift of pavement. All paving is expected to be completed prior to Barnesville Potato Days.

Then, tentatively scheduled to start the week of Aug. 28, the contractor will begin work on Phase 2 on Highway 9/Main Avenue, between Front Street and Fourth Avenue. The roadway will be impassable to all traffic from Front Street to the railroad tracks.

All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather dependent and subject to change. MnDOT urges motorists to always drive with caution, and reminds them to slow down in the work zone, obey traffic control, and never enter a roadway that has been blocked with barriers or cones.
