Case studies
The Safe System Approach aims to make travel safer for everyone by adding layers of protection. It recognizes people make mistakes and crashes will still happen, and designs the transportation system so mistakes don’t lead to severe injuries or death. It works like a safety net made of many parts: seat belts, air bags, guardrails, and good road design. If one layer doesn’t work, others still help protect you. It’s a proactive way to make the whole system safer, not just fix problems after they occur.
Examples
These communities prioritized their investments and incorporated elements of the Safe System Approach into their projects. Each case study highlights those elements and demonstrates how everyone benefits when we proactively account for human mistakes and design our roads as a system with multiple safety nets in place.
